Retail Systems Conference and Exhibition, Chicago, Ill.—May 24, 2005—Netezza Corporation today announced it has established a focused Retail & Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Division to serve this fast growing market segment. The dedicated unit comes in response to the growing number of leading retail organizations, such as Ahold USA, Amazon.com, Shoppers Drug Mart, The TJX Companies and others, that have selected the high-performance, low-cost Netezza Performance Server® (NPS®) system to meet their enterprise data warehousing needs.
According to AMR Research, Business Intelligence (BI) needs and demand forecasting
have been designated as the two most important technology infrastructure investments
for retailers in 2005. However, controlling the cost of these technology expenditures
remains paramount for many retail CIOs.
“Netezza deserves credit for addressing the critical data warehousing
pain points that have constrained retailers recently – strong technical
performance to deal with increasing amounts of data and query complexity coupled
with aggressive platform pricing that fits retailer budgets,” said Scott
Langdoc, vice president of research, AMR Research (see the April 20, 2005 AMR
Research Report “Netezza Builds Momentum in Retail: An Intriguing
Approach to Data Warehousing”).
Amazon.com recently deployed the NPS data warehouse appliance and according to Mark Dunlap, director of Business Intelligence, “Amazon.com is at the forefront of analyzing business information to enhance our customers’ ability to find and discover anything they want to buy online. With the Netezza system, we can conduct valuable, iterative analysis much faster then ever before possible.”
Andy Winans, an industry professional with more than 20 years experience in retail technology and solutions for data warehousing, will head the Netezza Retail & CPG Division. Along with Jim Kelly, director eastern region, and John Carlson, director western region, the team will leverage more than 60 years of retail and data warehousing experience to promote the NPS system’s ability to help retailers identify and deploy solutions for market-basket, in-depth merchandise, customer segmentation, loyalty card and clickstream analysis programs.
Netezza plans to leverage its extensive network of partnerships with leading Business Intelligence software providers such as Ascential, Business Objects, Cognos, Informatica, and MicroStrategy, as well as systems integrators such as Adastra, Claraview, Edgewater Technology, Headstrong, Lancet Software, Project Performance Corporation and Systech Solutions, to deliver retailers a robust Business Intelligence foundation. Netezza has also partnered with solutions providers including QuantiSense and VRMS to provide end-to-end BI solutions. These partners maximize the value of Netezza’s data warehouse system by enabling retailers to query substantially more data in real-time than traditional data warehouse systems. This is especially crucial to the retail enterprise where faster and deeper analysis of growing granular data is critical for improving the overall customer experience.
“Retail organizations are among the most data-intensive in the world,” said Andy Winans, vice president, Retail & CPG at Netezza. “They capture a tremendous amount of customer and operational data, which is growing exponentially. Until now, retailers have had to pay a tremendous premium to rapidly analyze this data at the granular level necessary to make pinpoint business decisions. Even with major investments in infrastructure, retailers’ data warehouses have not provided the speed and flexibility to meet the business needs of these enterprises. With our extensive ecosystem of partners and our high-performance data warehouse appliance, Netezza is well-equipped to meet the data warehousing needs of virtually every type and size of retailer, with complete offerings that are easy to implement, flexible to meet changing business requirements, and low cost.”
The Netezza Performance Server system is the market-leading data warehouse
appliance, built specifically to analyze large, complex amounts of detailed
data 10 to 50 times faster than existing data warehouse options, at half the
cost. The NPS system stores, filters and processes terabytes of records within
a single unit, analyzing only the relevant information for each query. Netezza
has placed the CPU power next to the data, allowing the NPS system to speed
through processes that would occupy most data warehouse systems for hours, or
even days, thereby enabling dramatic increases in productivity across the organization.
Customers who have recognized the performance benefits of Netezza’s approach
include Ahold USA, Amazon.com, Cingular Wireless, CNET Networks, Epsilon, Orange
UK, Premier, Inc., Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation and The TJX Companies.
